The Dale E. Benson Lecture in Business and Economic History
Naomi R. Lamoreaux, professor of economics and history at the
University of California, Los Angeles, will deliver a lecture
titled “From the Borough of London to Enron: Problems of
Corporate Governance and Historical Perspective.” Her talk
marks the third annual Dale E. Benson Lecture in Business and
Economic History. The lecture will be followed by a question-and-answer
session and a reception.

The State Farm MBA Executive Leadership Series presents Bob Hinton,
managing partner and chairman of the Dealer Services Group at
Moss Adams. A certified public accountant since 1989, Hinton works
exclusively with dealership accounting systems, auditing, financial
forecasting, internal control and fraud investigation. He earned
a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the
University of Puget Sound.

Visiting Writer Series: A reading by Achy Obejas
Internationally acclaimed for her activism and writing, Achy Obejas
is the author of “Days of Awe, Memory Mambo, and We Came
all the Way from Cuba to Dress Like This?” Born in Havana,
she came to the United States six years after the Cuban revolution
and spent 10 years writing for the Chicago Tribune, covering Pope
John Paul II’s historic 1998 visit to Cuba, the arrival
of Al-Queda prisoners in Guantanamo, the Versace murder and the
AIDS epidemic.

Germany’s Conflicted War on Terror
In a roundtable discussion, faculty from PLU and the University
of Puget Sound will explore the tension between public opinion
in Germany, which is firmly opposed to both the Iraq War and the
war on terror, and recent cases of the German government’s
involvement in arresting and torturing suspected terrorists. The
discussion will consider the impact on current policy of Germany’s
past experiences with domestic terrorism, specifically the notorious
Baader-Meinhof group, which carried out bombings and assassinations
in the 1970s.

Perspectives in the Social Sciences: Ideologies of Fatherhood
Among Unmarried Fathers
Teresa Ciabattari, assistant professor of sociology, will discuss
how new, unmarried fathers define their role as fathers. She will
explore which facets of fatherhood, such as providing, nurturing,
discipline or protection, they most highly value, and how the
father’s relationship with the child’s mother affects
this evaluation.

“Our Country's Good”
PLU theater presents, “Our Country’s Good,”
written by Timberlake Wertenbaker. Directed by theatre professor
Brian Desmond, the play depicts the true story of the first theatrical
performance in Australia. In June 1789, in the penal colony that
later became the city of Sydney, a marine lieutenant decides to
produce a play to celebrate the king’s birthday and casts
the play with the English convicts. The play is produced against
a background of food shortages and barbaric punishments, brilliantly
juxtaposed against the civilizing influence of theatrical endeavor.

The Latin Inscriptions of Rome: An Illustrated Lecture
By exploring the many Latin inscriptions of Rome through slides,
Latin scholar Tyler Lansford will help decode the story of this
ancient city. No prior knowledge of Latin is needed to enjoy the

The Roots of Migration: Free Trade, Immigration and Indigenous
Rights in Oaxaca
Centolia Maldonado Vasquez, a Mexican community leader from the
Binational Front of Indigenous Organizations, will discuss how
globalization, the neoliberal economic model and the United States
trade policy contributed to causing the current conflict and social
movement in Oaxaca, Mexico, as well as the choice of many to migrate
to the U.S. The discussion is part of the Witness for Peace Speaker
Tour.
